Once a student hits an academic snag, recovery can be nearly impossible during the academic year. Pepe Fanjul Jr. and the staff at Everglades Preparatory Academy invest part of their summers to offer these students a chance to regain lost academic ground and catch up before the fall semester begins. The entire program is designed to mix learning and fun for adults and students alike. Each morning, the curriculum includes classroom-based instruction focused on school subjects. Afternoons are packed with recreational activities that include field trips around the state of Florida. Students are able to improve grades that have marred their scholastic records.
The Q81 Foundation has been offering this program for the past three summers. Pepe Fanjul, Jr. says that the rewards are being returned many fold through appreciation and achievement in the following school years. Students are able to keep pace with their peers and avoid being held back. Skills are mastered in preparation for attending colleges and universities after graduation. Future leaders are coming out of this program and the adults realize their investment will change lives. The program’s agenda ensures that the students remain interested since their summer fun is enhanced instead of stifled.
Program participants continue to demonstrate that the additional time spent studying improves their grades in the future as well. Former participants have gone on to finish high school because of the skills that were imparted during the summer program. Pepe Fanjul Jr. had many exceptional academic opportunities. He believes education opens doors that would remain locked otherwise. Investing in the lives of young people has been a joy for him for as long as he can remember. He knows that Florida Crystals Corporation will always need a steady supply of great employees to sustain its position in the industry.
